Kamniski vrh on a cloudy evening

K05-KamnVrhO-20.jpg

Mt. Kamniski vrh used to be one of my favorite short hikes. It's just high enough for a quick training climb and the views from the top are great - weather permitting, of course. On July 1, it was very humid and for a moment my friend Manca and I even thought we were going to get soaked by rain. After a few minutes at the top we hurried by to the valley, just making it before the dark fell.

Fuerteventura - Day 1

A09-letO-066.jpg

My boyfriend and I booked a one week vacation on Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, a few months ago, but one day before we were supposed to leave my bf got ill and had to stay home. So I took my brother with me and we had a blast. Fuerteventura is such a beautiful island!

Fuerteventura - Day 2

B02-2LasSalinas-020.jpg

On the second day we rented a car, a small Opel Corsa, and started cruising the island. After visiting salt pans and exploring the nearby arid landscape in the middle of the day, we ended our day trip at the dunes and beaches near Corralejo.

Fuerteventura - Day 3

C50-6Betancuria-259.jpg

On the third day we made a loop around the northern half of the island. After driving through some otherworldly landscapes in beyond La Oliva, we visited two coastal villages, Los Molinos and Las Playitas, and then ascended to the magnificent lighthouse on a 200-meter-high cliff. The drive back over the Betancuria pass was one of the most spectacular on the whole island.

Fuerteventura - Day 5

E15-2PlayaSotavento-103.jpg

This was a long, but fantastic day. We started early and drove all the way to the south of Fuerteventura to see the town of Morro Jable, the white sandy beaches of Sotavento, the southern tip of the island with two lighthouses and the wild beaches at Cofete.

Fuerteventura - Day 6

F32-4LosMolinos-218.jpg

On Sunday we had to stay in the hotel because Peter wanted to watch Formula One on TV. :) Well, some lounging around the hotel pools didn't really hurt. We did, however, head out in the afternoon, first to the Corralejo dunes, then to the valleys around La Oliva and finally to Los Molinos again.

Fuerteventura - Day 7

G44-4LaPared-158.jpg

The average number of rainy days in May is 0. Yes, zero. Well, on that day, it rained. In Ajuy, there were only dark clouds, driving around la Pared and Sotavento was also dry, but we couldn't escape the rain on the way back through the otherwise picturesque Betancuria landscapes.

Spring colors of the Predel and Vršič passes

T19-Trenta-137.jpg

The first day the road over the Vršič pass was opened I made a loop over two alpine passes and through wonderful valleys. The spring colors were at its best and the greens contrasted the whiteness of the snow-capped mountains so strikingly I was speechless at times. It was a great day for a road trip, the last one with good weather before a series of gloomy, rainy days began.

Rakov Škocjan and Lake Cerknica

R04-1RakSkoc-053.jpg

Last year's Easter was cold and snowy. This year it was the exact opposite. Sunny, warm (about 20°C), the nature budding everywhere. And just like last year, we drove to Lake Cerknica. What a difference! Before enjoying the greenery around the lake, we visited the Big Natural Bridge at Rakov Škocjan. The water level was so high that many places along the river bed were inaccessible. To see what it looks like dry, have a look at September 2007.

S13-Spica-48.jpg

The first April Sunday was unbelievably warm. After opening the barbeque season and filling our stomachs with delicious ribs, our ex-neighrbors and I climbed the hill of Špica above Kamnik. There was a lot of haze in the air, but it's always interesting to see things from above.

Skiing on Velika planina

S12-VelPlan-082.jpg

With so much snow skiing is still possible at most Slovenian ski resorts. Because I hadn't skied on my home ski ground, Velika planina, for quite a few years, I decided to go there last Sunday, despite the fact that I had visited it many times this winter already. Velika planina is a place you can't easily get tired of! :)

V13-VelPlan-064.jpg

Foto klub Koroška came for a visit to Foto klub Kamnik last Saturday, and the two clubs climbed Mt. Velika planina in the afternoon. It was good to exchange information and get together with like-minded people, plus it was a lot of fun! And Velika planina never fails in terms of photographer's heaven. :)

Mali Golak

G23-MaliGolak-107.jpg

With the altitude of 1495 meters, Mali Golak is the highest summit (if we can call it that) of the Trnovski gozd plateau. Until a week ago I didn't even know it existed. :) I really need to explore this part of my country in a greater depth.
It was a nice hike through some beautiful beech forest with great views from the top - supposedly Mt. Blanc can be seen on a really clear day!

Late afternoon in the Zelenica valley

Z17-Zelenica-093.jpg

The sun kept inviting me out to the fresh air, and by 2 p.m. I was in my car driving towards Gorenjska. I didn't know where I was going and I turned off the highway instinctively and ascended towards the Ljubelj pass. I hiked up the Zelenica valley at the side of the ski run, hardly met anybody, and enjoyed the beautiful views. Oh and got whipped by the wind, of course. :)) On the way back I stopped by the Dolžanova soteska gorge and had a colorful sunset around Kranj.

Snow and rain in Mengeš

M06-Menges-10.jpg

After more than two weeks of rain and warm weather it started to snow again. Yesterday the view from my window was truly as it should be in early February - white! Last night it snowed some more and we woke up to 30 centimeters of snow. After shoveling the snow off my car I went for a walk around Mengeš but was soon forced to return home as it started to rain! I was completely wet in a matter of minutes and so was my camera. Oh well, I really do hope the snow holds and the weather returns to its wintry self.

Peričnik - a frozen waterfall

P06-Pericnik-038.jpg

Peričnik is one of the most majestic waterfalls in Slovenia during winter. Over 50 meters high, it freezes across a wide cliff in thousands of icicles, forming a frozen organ. Together with two fellow photographers I made the trip there and just in time, too! When the sun hit the waterfall, many of the icicles came crashing down, and the weather warmed up the following day, which made the situation even worse.

Today's trip led us to Jamnik, a hill above the Ljubljana basin with great views across to the Kamnik Alps and the Karavanke range. The late afternoon light was sweet, but it got even better after sunset when it turned pink and blue. Oh, and we were waiting for the full moon which didn't rise until after we left. :)

Winter fairytale on Rogla

R23-81231-Rogla-128a.jpg

We spent the New Year's with friends in a hut on the Rogla plateau. The scenery is beautiful, and apart from skiing you can also cross-country ski and hike around the numerous walking trails. I went for a long walk one afternoon and was amazed at the sights. And I didn't mind the cold as I was too busy admiring the nature and taking photos!

While skiing on Rogla for a few days around New Year's I took a few photos with my compact Olympus. The first day was especially cold - around -14 degrees Celsius at noon! - and everything was enveloped in snow and ice! It was magical. In the next couple of days the temperatures rose a bit and some of the snow on the trees melted.

Night skies on Velika planina mountain

V06-Velplanina-19.jpg

On Christmas Eve, there is a midnight mass on the Velika planina mountain. I went there in 2006 as well, and the experience had me so enthralled I decided to go on the night trek again and try to capture some of the beauty of a winter night. And indeed, it was beautiful. Many people with torches came and the procession was visible from afar. There was almost no wind to mess with my tripod and long exposures, yay! :)

This was a cold experience! We wanted to get some fresh air, so we drove to the nearby plateau of Menina planina, then walked to the top and back. The views were great, but because of the wind my fingers nearly froze! Supposedly, there are bears in this area, which made the hike all the more interesting. ;)

Sunset fog

G03-Groblje-13.jpg

There were some really foggy days in November, and knowing what a great photo op they can be I grabbed my camera one late afternoon and drove to nearby fields. The more I took photos, the more spectacular the light became. The sun was struggling to penetrate the fog, but it didn't quite succeed. And I left with a hundred or so photos and very pleased with the photo session.

We had a busy first November weekend and only had a couple of hours in the afternoon to go somewhere for some fresh air and maybe a photo or two before sunset. Pokljuka is always a nice place to go, and there were no other people at the meadow of Javorniki. On our way back we stopped in Bled as I simply couldn't resist capturing the reflection in the lake well after the sun had gone down.

Skiing in Mölltal

M03-MoelltalO-14.jpg

We went testing some ski equipment in mid October. Mölltal glacier in Austria is one of the few ski slopes where there's snow all year round, and it's only a two-hour drive away from Mengeš. The weather was a bit fickle and at times it was difficult to ski due to diffused light. We were thrilled anyway as the ski plate we were testing proved to be excellent and a big improvement over the others.

Sorica, Slatnik and Mozic in dramatic weather

S08-Sorica-27.jpg

A few members of our photo club decided to go on a hike to the mountains to capture some of the fall colors. Snow at higher altitudes prevented us from going to Slemenova špica, but in the end we had a fantastic time around Mt. Soriška planina. We climbed a few hills and explored the remains of bunkers and trenches from WWI, all the while being fascinated by the rapidly changing weather. From sun and blue skies to dark clouds and snow in a matter of ten minutes! As a conclusion to a perfect photo outing we stopped at Lake Bohinj.

Our photo club is organizing an exhibition in August, which has become traditional in the last few years. This time the topic is traffic, roads, paths, vehicles, bridges and the like - but the photos must be taken in Kamnik. We got together for a photo shoot a couple of times - it's more motivational to go out and take photos with your friends than to do it alone. Both times we only covered the town center, but I think I can dig up some of the older photos in addition to these. :)

In at least one respect, winter is the best time to visit Blejski Vintgar Gorge. There are no other visitors around who would stomp on the wooden footbridges, cause vibrations and make it impossible to take photos from a tripod. :)
On the other hand, the nature is not as colorful as in other season, but I was surprised to see quite a few red leaves on the footbridges and the water was emerald green since it hadn't been raining for a while.

From Sarajevo we drove to the north, past the industrial town of Zenica to Travnik with its impressive fortress Kaštel. You can't visit Jajce without seeing its famous waterfall. It was sad to see, however, that the area around it, which used to be a popular tourist spot, is now in the state of total disrepair. The drive further north to Banka Luka offered some great views of the river Vrbas canyon.

A rainbow

R6-rainbow-10.jpg

July 24. The heat wave is over I think. It started to rain in late afternoon and when I looked out the window, the light was freaky and there was a rainbow looming in the distance. The photos are not much, the best I can do from my apartment window. I keep kicking myself for not seeing the rainbow earlier and getting my ass out to the fields to get a nicer foreground. Oh well, there will be other rainbows I guess.

Hiking around Komna and Lake Krn

K10-Komna-110-HDR.jpg

With the stable hot and sunny weather forecast I decided to spend a couple of days hiking in the Julian Alps. My friend Nataša and I started on a Saturday afternoon by climbing to the Komna hut where we stayed overnight, and the following morning we got up really early to have enough time to hike to some of the nearby lakes and peaks. Due to the heat we came back dehydrated and exhausted, but as usual - it was worth it! :)

Crazy skies and a sunset from a hill

M15-Punat-01.jpg

We drive to Island Krk in Croatia at least once a month, but we're rarely blessed with dramatic skies, so the journey is usually nothing to write home about. But this one Friday in early July puffy white clouds embellished the blue sky. Plus I've been meaning to document the landscapes and seascape along the way for quite some time now. This was a perfect opportunity!
And even though by the evening the clouds dissipated, the atmosphere was so crisp and the light so sweet that we decided to climb a nearby hill to watch the sunset from there.

Night photos from Island Krk

S13-StBaska-099-HDR.jpg

With the wind blowing and a broken tripod I headed for the beach soon after sunset to get a few photos in the moonlight. The beach in Stara Baška is quite interesting and there's a little bit of everything - there are pebbles, there are rocks, one section is an ordinary beach, another is a nudist beach.
After it got too dark for taking pictures, I just lay on the pebbles and listened to the waves crashing against the rocks.

Lake Cerknica

C15-Cerknisko-182.jpg

Lake Cerknica is the biggest intermittent lake in Europe and a great photo op in all seasons. It goes dry in spring and all you can see are the remaining brooks that meander through fields - which are under water the rest of the year - and finally into the ground.

Morning mists from Sv. Ana Hill

S12-SvAna-038c.jpg

It was time to take some sunrise photos again, so I kicked myself out of bed at 4 a.m. and drove to the hill of Sv. Ana south of Ljubljana. From there the views over the Ljubljansko Barje marshland are fantastic. I was hoping for the weather to help me out, and it did - there were mists laying low to the ground until sun came up; then they turned into thick fog that rose all the way up to the hill where I was shooting from. They dissipated soon enough, but by then the light wasn't so great anymore, so my photo session ended at around 7.30 a.m.
Apart from taking photos of the mists, I also played around with bracketing to make HDR (high dynamic range) photos.

Kittens are little devils. Can't stay still for one second! I had fun chasing her around for an hour though ... and so did she. :) These are mostly fun piccies, some are even slightly OOF (out of focus), but for a more serious photo session I'll need more time, a better preparation and a helper to distract the kitty while I try to get some decent photos of her.

There is a midnight mass at Christmas on the Velika planina plateau every year. People hike there or take a cable car and walk across the plateau to the small chapel. It's very popular and the procession of people with torches in the dark is lovely to watch. There are always fireworks, too. This year it was so windy it almost blew me away. The photos were taken on a tripod but mostly they are blurry as the wind beat the poor light tripod which I tried to hold down as tightly as possible.

Menina Plateau in snow

Menina-10.jpg
