Savica waterfall and Lake Bohinj

B18-Bohinj-090-Hpm.jpg

A warm Sunday in early July was a perfect day to spend at Lake Bohinj. As I hadn't been to the Savica waterfall in a few years, I hiked there first and then walked around the lake a little. On the way back home the light was inviting, so I took a few more pics from Šmarjetna gora hill with views of the Kamnik Alps.

Sv. Ana is a great place to shoot the sunrise from, especially in early summer when you are almost guaranteed to see mists in the valley. And the sunrise was quite nice to boot!

Piran under the ominous sky

P02-Piran-01.jpg

When Jacqueline and I arrived at Piran, it was unclear whether it was going to rain or not. For a while, we we lucky enough to only admire the dark clouds, but as we headed for the Piran walls, we got soaked despite having umbrellas.

Crocuses on Velika planina

V35-VelPlan-149.jpg

One Thursday afternoon after work we headed up to Velika planina, the first time this year. April is the month when the mountain is like a violet carpet of crocuses. Combined with the sweet late afternoon light the hike was more than satisfying.

Spring skiing on Rogla and Krvavec

K06-KrvavecO-19.jpg

We've had summer temperatures in the beginning of April - around 24 degrees C! But we still wanted to do some skiing so we headed to Rogla and Mt. Krvavec only to see ugly, brown, muddy slopes with some patches of slushy snow left. It was quite a sight. :)

Secovlje salt pans at sunrise

S01-1Secovlje-008-Hpm.jpg

My friends Črt and Luka and I got up at 4 a.m. one morning and headed to the Adriatic coast to shoot the sunrise at the Sečovlje salt pans (Sečoveljske soline). It was freezing at 6.30 and the light was sweet. After exploring the area of now disused salt pans we drove to Portorož, the biggest Slovenian seaside resort town, for some coffee, and concluded the day with a short stop at Lipica, the famous stud farm and the origin of the Lipizzaner horses.

R21-2PlanJama-11.jpg

Sebastian and I wandered around Rakov Škocjan in snow in the morning. The afternoon was spent in the Planina Cave (Planinska jama): first we rowed a boat on an underground river and then spent quite a few hours crawling in mud and squeezing through narrow passages. It was great! :)

Grey and bleak day in Piran, Socerb and Škocjan Cave

O16-3Skocjan-10.jpg

My friend Sebastian and I explored our coast and Karst one grey Sunday in February. Piran was grey, and there was no distinction between the sea and the sky. Then we quickly visited Socerb Castle before heading to the Škocjan Cave. Photography is not allowed inside, but I took a few pics at the exit and from the viewpoint.

In one week, after starting in Ljubljana and hiding from the torrential rain in the Postojna Cave, we visited Bled, Vintgar Gorge, Pokljuka, Vrata and then crossed over to Bovec to see the beautiful Lepena and Trenta valleys.

My first skiing on Krvavec this season was quite OK. It was cloudy, but the snow was perfect, not too hard (and not icy at all) and not too soft. As always we only skied for a few hours as the carving technique, if done properly, really exhausts you.

Skiing on Velika planina

Last weekend in February was sunny and too warm for that time of year. Fortunately the snow at higher altitude was still great for skiing without becoming wet and heavy in the afternoon. Velika planina was white and frozen in the morning, but later on the trees started to drip with melting snow. The views were terrific the whole day though and with only a handful of skiers the place was a great choice to spend a beautiful day skiing.

Prague - Day 3

C37-Praga-173.jpg

Sunday was sunny and lazy; we just strolled around some of the sights that we hadn't visited yet. From Olšany Cemetery (Olšanské hřbitovy) we walked to Plečnik's church in Žižkov, then took a ride up the television tower for the views, and strolled past Náměstí Míru toward the old city. Velika planina again - sunset and fog!

P22-Velplan-113.jpg

On a whim we decided one late afternoon to treat ourselves to some more soured milk so we packed our backpacks and sped to Kisovec where we started another climb to Velika planina. We were just in time for some spectacular clouds, sun rays and fog, which followed. By the time we got back to the car, it was dark. Yes, soured milk was delicious! :)

Velika planina in clouds and rain

Kamniski vrh on a cloudy evening

K05-KamnVrhO-20.jpg

Mt. Kamniski vrh used to be one of my favorite short hikes. It's just high enough for a quick training climb and the views from the top are great - weather permitting, of course. On July 1, it was very humid and for a moment my friend Manca and I even thought we were going to get soaked by rain. After a few minutes at the top we hurried by to the valley, just making it before the dark fell.

Fuerteventura - Day 1

A09-letO-066.jpg

My boyfriend and I booked a one week vacation on Fuerteventura, one of the Canary Islands, a few months ago, but one day before we were supposed to leave my bf got ill and had to stay home. So I took my brother with me and we had a blast. Fuerteventura is such a beautiful island!

Fuerteventura - Day 3

On the third day we made a loop around the northern half of the island. After driving through some otherworldly landscapes in beyond La Oliva, we visited two coastal villages, Los Molinos and Las Playitas, and then ascended to the magnificent lighthouse on a 200-meter-high cliff. The drive back over the Betancuria pass was one of the most spectacular on the whole island.

Spring colors of the Predel and Vršič passes

T19-Trenta-137.jpg

The first day the road over the Vršič pass was opened I made a loop over two alpine passes and through wonderful valleys. The spring colors were at its best and the greens contrasted the whiteness of the snow-capped mountains so strikingly I was speechless at times. It was a great day for a road trip, the last one with good weather before a series of gloomy, rainy days began.

Rakov Škocjan and Lake Cerknica

R04-1RakSkoc-053.jpg

Last year's Easter was cold and snowy. This year it was the exact opposite. Sunny, warm (about 20°C), the nature budding everywhere. And just like last year, we drove to Lake Cerknica. What a difference! Before enjoying the greenery around the lake, we visited the Big Natural Bridge at Rakov Škocjan. The water level was so high that many places along the river bed were inaccessible. To see what it looks like dry, have a look at September 2007.

Snow and rain in Mengeš

M06-Menges-10.jpg

After more than two weeks of rain and warm weather it started to snow again. Yesterday the view from my window was truly as it should be in early February - white! Last night it snowed some more and we woke up to 30 centimeters of snow. After shoveling the snow off my car I went for a walk around Mengeš but was soon forced to return home as it started to rain! I was completely wet in a matter of minutes and so was my camera. Oh well, I really do hope the snow holds and the weather returns to its wintry self.

The area is a high peat swampland and a few small lakes are only fed by precipitation as there is no groundwater. A nearby viewing tower is ideal to get a better idea what the place looks like from above.

Natural bridges of Rakov Škocjan

Rakov Škocjan is a nature reserve in Slovenian karst region. Its spectacular formations are a truly remarkable sight. I explored the big and small natural bridges during the dry season, which means there was no water in the river bed and it was easier to walk around.

Mostar, Bosnia and Herzegovina

M15-Mostar-85.jpg

After two weeks of beach and surfing in Viganj we headed to Bosnia and Herzegovina. The first destination was Mostar, a town on the Neretva River, which was named after the Old Bridge. Mostar is also famous for being on of the hottest places in Europe (some say the world) and when we were there in late August, it was 48 degrees Celsius (118 F) and so hot I couldn't stand still because my feet were burning from the hot pavement.

Sarajevo

S18-0Sarajevo-141.jpg

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is a city with a turbulent past. Many of the buildings have been rebuilt after the war, but there are still a lot of remainders of the horror that went on. The old part of town with Baščaršija (bazaar) is lovely and the ubiquitous čevapčići served at every corner are delicious.

Around Bosnia

T20-6JajceToBorder-11-HDR.jpg

From Sarajevo we drove to the north, past the industrial town of Zenica to Travnik with its impressive fortress Kaštel. You can't visit Jajce without seeing its famous waterfall. It was sad to see, however, that the area around it, which used to be a popular tourist spot, is now in the state of total disrepair. The drive further north to Banka Luka offered some great views of the river Vrbas canyon.

A rainbow

R6-rainbow-10.jpg

July 24. The heat wave is over I think. It started to rain in late afternoon and when I looked out the window, the light was freaky and there was a rainbow looming in the distance. The photos are not much, the best I can do from my apartment window. I keep kicking myself for not seeing the rainbow earlier and getting my ass out to the fields to get a nicer foreground. Oh well, there will be other rainbows I guess.

Hiking around Komna and Lake Krn

With the stable hot and sunny weather forecast I decided to spend a couple of days hiking in the Julian Alps. My friend Nataša and I started on a Saturday afternoon by climbing to the Komna hut where we stayed overnight, and the following morning we got up really early to have enough time to hike to some of the nearby lakes and peaks. Due to the heat we came back dehydrated and exhausted, but as usual - it was worth it! :)

Crazy skies and a sunset from a hill

M15-Punat-01.jpg

We drive to Island Krk in Croatia at least once a month, but we're rarely blessed with dramatic skies, so the journey is usually nothing to write home about. But this one Friday in early July puffy white clouds embellished the blue sky. Plus I've been meaning to document the landscapes and seascape along the way for quite some time now. This was a perfect opportunity!
And even though by the evening the clouds dissipated, the atmosphere was so crisp and the light so sweet that we decided to climb a nearby hill to watch the sunset from there.

Night photos from Island Krk

S13-StBaska-099-HDR.jpg

With the wind blowing and a broken tripod I headed for the beach soon after sunset to get a few photos in the moonlight. The beach in Stara Baška is quite interesting and there's a little bit of everything - there are pebbles, there are rocks, one section is an ordinary beach, another is a nudist beach.
After it got too dark for taking pictures, I just lay on the pebbles and listened to the waves crashing against the rocks.

Morning mists from Sv. Ana Hill

S12-SvAna-038c.jpg

It was time to take some sunrise photos again, so I kicked myself out of bed at 4 a.m. and drove to the hill of Sv. Ana south of Ljubljana. From there the views over the Ljubljansko Barje marshland are fantastic. I was hoping for the weather to help me out, and it did - there were mists laying low to the ground until sun came up; then they turned into thick fog that rose all the way up to the hill where I was shooting from. They dissipated soon enough, but by then the light wasn't so great anymore, so my photo session ended at around 7.30 a.m.
Apart from taking photos of the mists, I also played around with bracketing to make HDR (high dynamic range) photos.

Midnight mass on Velika planina mountain

V02-VelPlan-08.jpg

There is a midnight mass at Christmas on the Velika planina plateau every year. People hike there or take a cable car and walk across the plateau to the small chapel. It's very popular and the procession of people with torches in the dark is lovely to watch. There are always fireworks, too. This year it was so windy it almost blew me away. The photos were taken on a tripod but mostly they are blurry as the wind beat the poor light tripod which I tried to hold down as tightly as possible.

K07-Kriska-094NI.jpg

It was foggy in the lowlands, so I decided to drive up to the Kriska Mountain at about 1500 meters above sea level and then continue on foot for another hour or so. The views over the sea of fog was spectacular, especially at sunset. On my way down, I even saw some parachuters descending into the fog.

A hike in the Kamnik Alps

W29-Brana-124.jpg

The fall was slowly coming to an end, the last warm days were saying goodbye, and it was one of the last chances to go hiking in dry conditions. I chose Mount Brana in the Kamnik Alps, a good three hour hike (and climb) to the summit at 2,252 meters above sea level. The weather was great, the views were spectacular, and there were so many things to photograph! All in all I couldn't be happier with the way the hike turned out.
