Vacation at Viganj, Peljesac in Croatia
Our journey began in the wee hours and by mid-morning we reached the coast near Makarska where the road crosses a mountain ridge and descends to the sea.
One of the idyllic beaches accessible only by boat or on foot.
That was close. :)
In Ploče we boarded a ferry which took us across the channel to the Pelješac peninsula.
Looking back on Ploče from the ferry.
The northern side of Pelješac, wild and largely uninhabited.
Despite the wind it was warm and most people stayed on the deck.
Making a turn.
We entered the port of Trpanj ...
... which is one of the few villages on the peninsula.
Walking on the pier.
The ferry was rather small.
In Viganj, we found ourselves a room ...
... and after a short downpour rushed to the beach, which was already glowing in the late-afternoon, after-rain light.
There is Island Korčula on the right.
A few people came to the beach to watch the sunset.
Sweet light.
Sitting on the pier and meditating.
One windsurfer took to the sea but there was hardly any wind.
Island Korčula.
Last rays.
A windsurf in the sea.
The sky and clouds turned orange.
Sunset.
A little girl jumping.
Creamy cloud.
The town of Korčula.
There is a road that ascends the hills above Viganj and offers great views over the coast and Island Korčula across the channel. The land jutting into the sea on the left is our beach.
Viganj and Island Korčula.
Grasses and a chapel.
Island Korčula.
Panoramic view from the road above Viganj.
Some sunsets were more spectacular than others.
It was really that red.
Waves in the sunset.
Hills above Viganj in different weather: here the storm was brewing ...
... and here the clouds created a pattern of light on the slopes.
The air was clear after the rain ...
... but after a few days of heat, the air became misty.
Our beach was pebbly and occupied mostly by windsurfers and kitesurfers.
When there was no wind, kites and surfs were spread on the beach.
A whole spectrum of colors.
Kites on the beach and kitesurfers wandering around and praying for wind.
Dramatic skies just before sunset.
Kiteboards come in all colors and designs.
The beach.
The beach.
Resting and waiting.
The surf and the sea.
One morning was especially dramatic - ominous clouds and scorching sun at the same time.
Measuring the strength of the wind.
One of the many small piers locals built for their boats. Almost every house has one.
The beach.
One day we went to a deserted beach a few kilometers from Viganj that is only accessible via a steep path down the slope from the road.
Crystal clear waters.
Here the beach consisted not only of pebbles but also of bigger stones and rocks.
At night, Viganj is just as sleepy as during the day. A few pubs and restaurants line the coast.
